Fit & sizing / THE HOUSE OF HOUND

How to measure for a harness.

Start with the chart for the exact model, and a few calm minutes with your dog.

The chart comes first.

Harness designs measure different parts of the body. Open the size chart for the model you are considering before reaching for the tape. Note every dimension it requires and whether the measurements describe the dog or the product.

Record each measurement.

Use a flexible tape while your dog stands comfortably. Follow the diagram for the neck, chest and any additional dimensions. Keep the tape level. Do not add an allowance unless the product instructions tell you to do so.

Compare the complete picture.

Check every required measurement against one size. A chest match alone may miss a neck or head-opening issue. If the dimensions fall across sizes, overlap two ranges or sit at a boundary, ask for help rather than assuming that bigger is better.

Check again when it arrives.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for putting on and adjusting the harness. Give your dog time to become comfortable with it. Check equipment for wear, and recheck fit as your dog changes. A measurement guide cannot guarantee fit for an individual dog.
